Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League crown after defeating Arsenal FC 2-1 on penalties following a thrilling 1-1 draw that remained unresolved after 120 minutes.
The French champions showed great determination to come from behind and eventually prevailed in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Arsenal Strike Early
Arsenal made a dream start when Kai Havertz scored in the sixth minute after taking advantage of a defensive mistake.
The German forward burst into the penalty area and fired a powerful shot past goalkeeper Matvey Safonov to give the Gunners an early lead.
The goal briefly unsettled PSG, but the holders gradually took control through the creativity of Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Vitinha.
Although PSG dominated possession and created several chances, Arsenal’s defence remained disciplined, allowing them to carry their 1-0 lead into halftime.
Dembele Levels From The Spot
PSG increased the pressure after the break and eventually found a way back into the match in the 65th minute.
Following a VAR review, a penalty was awarded for a foul by Cristhian Mosquera.
Dembele calmly converted the spot kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and bringing the score level at 1-1.
The equaliser sparked an exciting contest as PSG pushed for a winner. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck the post, while Vitinha narrowly missed with a long-range effort.
Arsenal also threatened on the counterattack, introducing Viktor Gyokeres, Gabriel Martinelli and Eberechi Eze in search of a decisive goal.
Extra Time And Penalty Drama
Neither side could find a winner in normal time, forcing the final into extra time.
Fatigue began to show, and clear-cut chances were limited. Arsenal came closest when Martin Zubimendi saw a late effort blocked near goal.
With the score still level after 120 minutes, the match was decided by penalties.
Gonçalo Ramos and Désiré Doué scored for PSG, while Gyökeres and Declan Rice converted for Arsenal.
Goalkeeper Safonov then became PSG’s hero by saving Eze’s penalty. Although Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya kept his side alive by stopping Nuno Mendes, PSG remained in control.
Achraf Hakimi scored PSG’s next penalty before Martinelli converted for Arsenal.
The decisive moment came when Lucas Beraldo calmly scored PSG’s final kick. Arsenal defender Gabriel then failed to convert, triggering celebrations among PSG players and supporters.
The victory secured back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles for Paris Saint-Germain and further strengthened their position among Europe’s elite clubs.
