Help Enlighten The Public On The Danger Of Smuggling Things Into The State, Abdullahi Tells Oyo Speaker

The Area Comptroller of the Nigeria Custom in charge of Oyo/Osun command Zulkifli Abdullahi has urged the Oyo State Speaker Rt. Hon Adebo Ogundoyin that the legislative arm of Government should help enlighten the public especially those living close to the border on the dangers of things that comes into the state.

He made this statement today 16th July when the Hon. Speaker alongside his Deputy and few other Hon. Members paid a courtesy visit to the customs office located at Ikolaba in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

According to Abdullahi, he explained that the job of the custom is to collect required revenue and to enforce the laws of the nation.
” the job of the custom is in two forms, to collect required revenue and to enforce the laws of the nation. Smuggling does not only consists of food, oil etc we make sure that arms don’t come into the country illegally.”

The Area Comptroller reiterated that no matter how hard they try to curb these illegalities, people still smuggle things into the country “we are only trying, we cannot do everything. No matter how hard we try people will still smuggle contraband into the country.”

He called on the Speaker to enlighten the public on the dangers of these contrabands that comes into the country ” there are rice that comes into the country but are already expired but our people don’t care, they still buy and this is not good for their health. We find used brassieres, pant etc we don’t know who used these clothing but our people buy and wear them and this can cause health challenges for them.” He lamented

Speaking on the revenue, Abdullahi said they achieved 92% of last years revenue, their target was 24.8 billion and they generated 22billion. “It is possible that our revenue for this year will be up to 40billion because as we speak, we have realized 20billion naira.”

He finally said that items like rice, oil and other edibles recovered from smugglers are not auctioned by custom Officials but are being taken to IDPs, motherless and orphanage homes respectively
“The Government has not auctioned any rice,oil etc these items are given to IDPs , motherless etc. Custom are not auctioning any items. You can only get auction through customs website and follow the instructions carefully.” He said

The Rt. Hon Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin in his earlier remark assured the custom of the full support of the legislative arm of Government and also encouraged them to do their job diligently
“The legislative is the basic and centre of democracy, we want to assure you of our full co-operation and encourage you to do better, and in so doing we are going to make Oyo State better.” He said
