Trump’s criticism followed Zelenskyy’s recent statement that peace with Russia remains “very, very far away.”
United States President, Donald Trump again launched a scathing attack on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, accusing him of being uninterested in securing peace with Russia.
The remarks came as the Trump’s administration was set to meet with top officials to determine whether to continue US aid to Ukraine, according to Daily Mail.
Trump’s criticism followed Zelenskyy’s recent statement that peace with Russia remains “very, very far away.”
Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump called the comment “the worst statement that could have been made,” warning that “America will not put up with it for much longer.”
The tension between the two leaders reportedly boiled over during a meeting at the White House on Friday.
Zelenskyy’s visit, meant to shore up support amid waning enthusiasm for U.S. military assistance, was cut short after he and American officials, including President Biden, clashed over whether Russian President Vladimir Putin could be trusted in negotiations.
Zelenskyy then traveled to the United Kingdom, where European leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine. However, Trump doubled down on his critique, arguing that Ukraine’s reliance on Western aid was unsustainable.
“It is what I was saying, this guy doesn’t want there to be peace as long as he has America’s backing,” Trump wrote. “And Europe, in the meeting they had with Zelenskyy, stated flatly that they cannot do the job without the U.S.”
Since Russia’s invasion in 2022, Zelenskyy has been widely praised for leading Ukraine’s resistance. However, his reception in Washington has shifted with the return of Trump’s influence. In the Oval Office on Friday, sources say Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance rebuked Zelenskyy for suggesting that Putin could not be trusted in negotiations.
Despite the tense interactions, Zelenskyy sought to reassure allies while in London, expressing optimism about the US-Ukraine relationship.
“I think our relationship will continue, because it’s more than an occasional relationship,” he said on Sunday.
