Mohamed Salah scores a brace against Tottenham to overtake Erling Haaland as the leading goalscorer in the EPL this season.
Mohamed Salah scored a brace and provided an assist as Liverpool prevailed 6-3 against Tottenham in their English Premier League (EPL) encounter at the London Stadium on Sunday.
The Egyptian striker was in his element and overtook Erling Haaland on the league’s goalscoring chart with 15 goals as Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the EPL in the nine-goal thriller.
Luiz Diaz also got a double as one each from Alexis Mac Allister and Dominic Szoboszlai overshadowed goals from James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke for Spurs.
Diaz put Arne Slot’s side ahead in the 23rd minute in the fast-paced encounter, producing a low header past Fraser Forster from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross.
Mac Allister doubled the advantage in the 36th minute with a looping header over Forster from a few yards out.
Then, both sides exchanged two quick goals towards the end of the half. First, Maddison halved the deficit for Tottenham with a 20-yard strike on 41 minutes before Szoboszlai slotted Mohamed Salah’s pass into the back of the net from close range to restore Liverpool’s two-goal advantage, the visitors going into the break ahead 3-1.
Salah took centre stage in the second period, slamming home a rebound on 64 minutes for his first of the night before coolly tucking home his second from Szoboszlai’s pass seven minutes later.
Kulusevski volleyed home from 15 yards, and Solanke tucked in from close range for Tottenham for 5-3 before Diaz completed his hattrick with an angled drive to the far post to seal a see-saw encounter for Liverpool.
Arne Slot’s side extended their lead at the top of the table to four points with 39 points from 16 matches, ahead of second-placed Chelsea, who dropped points following a goalless draw against Everton.
Earlier, Bournemouth scored twice in the second half to consign a poor Manchester United side to a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford. The Red Devils were disjointed in defence and profligate in front of goal as Dean Huijsen’s header, Justin Kluivert’s penalty, and an Antoine Semenyo strike sealed a dominant win for the visitors who moved up to fifth on the log while Man United are in 13th place.
