Governor Wike said this on Thursday morning during a media chat with the Channels TV crew at his residence in Port Harcourt, the state capital, saying that if he is not relevant, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and other presidential candidates would not be running to him.
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has boasted that presidential candidates of different political parties in Nigeria run to him because they know his value and relevance in the state and beyond.
Wike who was asked if he thinks he is losing or has lost his relevance because of the internal crisis in the PDP and the G5 governors he leads said, “Who is more relevant in PDP than me?”
When asked if he is also more relevant than the party’s presidential candidate, he said, “Are they not looking for me? If I’m not relevant, why are you looking for me?
“How many presidential candidates have come to see me if I’m not relevant? It is not to appear on Arise Television. Is it not on record in this country from 2015 till 2019, APC (All Progressives Congress) never had 25% in Rivers State, even when they had a sitting governor who was their DG (Rotimi Amaechi).”
He said, “It is not a question of talking, we will see what will happen. Relevance is what you can contribute. So many people in PDP, for example, there is one man in Yobe State, since 1999 till now, PDP has never won anything but these are the people who would talk and they are seen as people who are relevant.
“What makes you relevant when you can’t win your state, you cannot produce a senator, a House of Reps member? Why should relevance be because you appear on television, because Arise calls you to come and talk about Wike? Is that what makes you relevant?”
Wike maintained that “relevance is what you can produce to give to the party”.
