Segun Akanni, Toronto, Canada Fulani herdsmen have been accused of killing no fewer that 10 persons in Obio Usiere, Odukapni Local Government Area of Cross River State.
While two were killed two weeks ago, another eight fell victim to the Fulani herdsmen last week.
The head of Obio Usiere village, Apostle Iya Orok, who disclosed the figure to newsmen, said they discovered eight more corpses after the first two found when the herdsmen invaded the village two weeks ago.
Orok said: “We have lost nothing less than 10 people in this attack by Fulani herdsmen.
“They normally come during the dry season to feed their cattle in our area.
“The same incident occurred two years ago when two people were shot dead.
“Now it’s 10 people.
“As I speak with you, Obio Usiere has been deserted.
“Our women are afraid to go their farms because they rape them in the bush and no one can help them.
“These people are heavily armed and we are just helpless.”
Orok said reporting to the police and the Department of State Services has not helped.
He therefore called on the Cross Rivers State Governor, Prof. Ben shade, to come to their rescue.
He said: “We have reported to police, DSS and other security agencies and we call on Governor Ben Ayade to help us because about 3,500 people are now homeless.
“We have become refugees in our own land.”
The Cross River State Police Command, however, said only one person died in the attacks.
The position of the Command was stated by its spokesperson, ASP Irene Ugbo, who equally revealed that policemen have been drafted to the area.
Ugbo said: “Our men are on ground 24 hours and we are not aware of any other killing.
“The rise in the death toll has not been reported to us and we are not leaving the place.”
