A Brampton mother has been given a bravery award after she intervened and scared off three men attacking her son with an axe and a machete last month.
Peel Regional Police say they were called to the area of Hurontario Street and Mayfield Road in Brampton at 8 a.m. on August 4 for reports of an assault at a residence.
Shocking video footage shows the victim first attacked by a man with an axe, and then two others jumped in with a machete.
The man was identified as a local Punjabi host with Fateh Radio, Joti Singh Mann. He survived the violent incident but suffered serious injuries to his hand, resulting in over 150 stitches.
Police say it was a targeted attack, but the motive is unclear.
The video shows the victim’s mother, Jasmail, running from their home toward the three attackers and scaring them off. She is seen throwing a shoe at them as they run away and flee the area.
The City of Brampton says Kaur Mann bravely and courageously saved her son from the vicious attack in their driveway.
“I think it speaks to the intensity of the love that a mother has for their child,” Mayor Patrick Brown said on Thursday.
We’re here to recognize the courage and bravery of this act. The fact that Kaur Mann would run towards danger… you ran to save your son. You risked your safety. Because of your bravery, we could all witness your incredible courage.”
Mayor Brown says the entire city and community wanted to recognize Kaur Mann for her selfless awareness and courageous actions.
Speaking through translator and MP Ruby Sahota, Kaur Mann described the events of that day, noting how terrified she was for her son’s life.
“Her real motivation, even today, is that she wants the attackers to be found,” Kaur Mann said. “She says, who are those people that could be so inhumane, that could be cutting up her son like he was a tree or an object.”
City councillor Michael Palleschi echoed the Mayor’s sentiments.
“Your bravery is recognized today, and we’re forever indebted to you for what you did that day,” he said.
The three suspects remain at large
