Embattled national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu, has insisted that no individual leader can hijack the party.
Ayu, who said this while speaking at the reception ceremony organised in honour of former governor of Kano State and Senator representing Kano Central, Ibrahim Shekarau, in Kano, said that PDP was built by leaders collectively, thus, nobody could destroy nor distract the party from achieving victory in the 2023 general elections.
The chairman is believed to be referring to Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who alongside some governors on his side, had laid demands to the party’s leadership to resolve the lingering crisis, including the resignation of Ayu.
According to Sun, Ayu, at the reception, said “We are not going to be distracted by those who believe that in peddling lies they would destroy the PDP. I believe that God willing, we shall overcome all the distracting forces. Our party would get more united.”
Ayu, who has been under fire as some members of the party, especially from the Southern region of Nigeria, said that Kano State was strategic and important to the PDP.
Ayu described Shekarau as a team player who is ready to work with other members to ensure victory for the party at the state and federal levels.
Also speaking during the occasion, Shekarau appealed to his supporters to work for the PDP to ensure that it emerged victorious at the 2023 general elections.
He said, “I have written to the NNPP National Chairman, chairmen at the state, local governments, and ward levels of the party that I have dumped the NNPP.
“I have equally written to the INEC Chairman and to the Kano State Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC that I am no longer contesting the senatorial position on the platform of the NNPP.”
The former member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) was then registered as the full member of PDP by its Northwest Vice Chairman, Senator Bello Hayatu-Gwarzo.
Recall that Shekarau joined the NNPP in May this year after he defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the platform on which he won the senatorial seat.”
