Yusuf Lasun, former deputy speaker of the house of representatives, says gunmen invaded his residence in Osun state on Monday.
In a tweet on Monday, the former legislator said the armed men shot randomly at his residence.
Lasun, who is the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP), did not say if any person was shot or whether properties were destroyed in the shooting.
“Just in: gun men in uniforms are presently in my residence shooting sporadically,” he wrote.
In another tweet about five hours later, Lasun said: “And (remember) when the disbelievers plotted against you to imprison you, or to kill you, or to expel you (from your home, Makkah); they were plotting and Allah too was plotting, and Allah is the best of plotters. Quran 8 verse 30.”
When TheCable contacted Opalola Yemisi, police spokesperson in Osun, to inquire about the attack, she said officers have been dispatched to investigate the matter.
“The report got to me this morning. The divisional police officer (DPO) in that area has gone there to confirm to ascertain what really happened,” she said.
The development comes hours after Lasun participated in the governorship debate on Channels TV.
While speaking at the debate, Lasun said state police is inevitable if security challenges must be addressed.
“There is little any state government can do. Amotekun cannot arrest. In the long run, we have to amend the constitution for state police,” he said.
“I am going to develop a robust community development association. They will work with Amotekun in collating and passing intelligence information.
“The fundamental problem of insecurity is our constitution. The most potent part of security is intelligence gathering. Our country has porous borders. People just enter the country anyhow.”
