Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has sworn in the newly elected senator representing Osun West Senatorial District, Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke, as he lamented that Adeleke won on PDP platform because of mishandling of issues in All Progressives Congress (APC) before the Senatorial bye-election in Osun West.
Saraki after the swearing in ceremony said in a tweet, “I filled with emotions as I swore in the brother of late Senator Isiaka Adeleke as Senator representing Osun West.”
Saraki said his sadness was that Ademola Adeleke came into the Senate as an APC member, stressing, and
“This is the result of mishandling of pre-election matters by our party.
He added, “This development will serve as an eye opener to our party at all levels that the will of the people must always be respected. We all have a good lesson to learn from this.”
The entry of Adeleke into Senate has now shot up the number of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to 43.
With this development, the APC now has 65 members from the total of 108 Senators in the Senate, while the seat of Senator Uche Ekwunife who had represented Anambra Central on the platform of PDP still remains vacant.
The new Senator was clad in white Yoruba traditional agbada attire with a befitting cap style of his late brother, Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke.
Before his election, Adeleke was a member of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) and had had to defect into the PDP when he was denied access to contest on the platform of APC, as the ground was yielded to Senator Mudashir Hussain.
Senator Adeleke was declared winner of the bye-election held last Saturday, winning in nine out of 10
local government areas of the senatorial district.
Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC had declared Adeleke of the PDP winner of the bye-election, polling 97, 480 votes to beat his arch rival, Senator Mudashir Hussein of the APC who scored 66, 116.
Announcing the results, the returning officer, Professor Laide Lawal said the total number of registered voters was 431, 674 while 171, 575 were accredited to partake.
The bye-election, in which 11 political parties participated, occasioned by the death of Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, the first executive governor of Osun State who died on April 23, 2017 following a brief illness.
