Let me start this very significant intervention by saluting the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, for again taking yet another historic step with the appointment of the Generallissimo of one of Nigeria’s most distinguished ethnic population, the Yorubas, which culminated in the choice of Otunba Gani Adams.
The appointment of Gani Adams brought lasting impressions as to the lofty values that the Yorubas hold dear. One of such striking values is that for Alafin to have bestowed such gigantic honour on Otunba Gani Adams shows that honour in Yorubaland surpasses ones wealth or privileged pedigree.
Whichever side one chooses to measure his worth, what cannot be controverted is the truth that Adams has paid his dues. He did at critical points in the sociopolitical emancipation of the Yoruba people, and the Country Nigeria as a Corporate entity. He did, when the supposedly superior minds and muscles hid their heads. He showed up. He rescued. He has fought for his people and he continues to do with all that are his by God’s gracious endowments.
The sweeping testimonies that greeted Adam’s appointment are noble, part of which is that you need not nudge Otunba Adams to defend his country and the Yorubas. He is reputed as a ready commando anyday for worthy and just cause. Testimonials abound that he gave his people the much needed respect during the heated June 12 saga. Otunba Gani has shown unusual courage during dangerous days; he has distinguished himself by his unique love for the Yoruba race as always openly demonstrated, and his native intelligence is unparalleled among his kind.
The foregoing strengths of this distinguished Nigerian have repeatedly encouraged us to defended him & founder of Oodua People’s Congress, Dr. Fredrick Fasehun during hot travails. Adams is courageous – a trait most central to his new office, and down to heart, humane, kind and compassionate. Another distinguishing factor of Otunba Gani in comparison with his forbearers in his new office is the fact that he has neither held any political office nor openly affiliated with any political party. He has as well given preference to the Yoruba Politics for the interest of the sons of Yoruba over National Politcs.
We must, however, encourage the new Aare to use his office to further unite the Leaders and elites of Yoruba nation; to ensure that the Sons and Daughters of the clan are much more United than ever before this time.
I’ve propose that his name be changed like every other Kakanfos to reflect where he comes from, (Gani Akoko, for instance). Again I congratulate, heartily, the new Generalissimo and wish him good health in his new assignment of nation building. May the Yoruba people and Nigeria know higher dosage of peace and prosperity in your time.
