Dr Albasu Kunini, Speaker, Taraba House of Assembly, has raised alarm over fresh attacks and killings at Bujum Waya community in Lau Local Government Area of the state.
Kunini said in Jalingo on Wednesday that he was shocked by the killing of two brothers by unknown gunmen, barely 24 hours after a peace meeting between some natives and their Fulani counterpart took place in Jalingo.
Kunini said that beside the dead, three other persons were injured during the attack.
Report states that the peace and reconciliation meeting between the Yandang community and their Fulani counterpart took place at the Taraba Police Command Headquarters in Jalingo on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by His Royal Highness, Kpanh Sanwi of Yandang Tribe, to which Bujum Waya community belonged, and the Chief of Lau, who represented the Fulani.
The Speaker, representing Lau Constituency in the state assembly, described the Bujum Waya attack as barbaric and highly condemnable during his visit to the community.
Kunini stated that the attack was uncalled for, considering the fact that the peace and reconciliation took place on Tuesday, April 21.
“We thought that by the virtue of that meeting, peace would have returned to Lau Local Government Area; but this morning, my attention was equally drawn that a particular village, precisely Bujum Waya, was attacked
“The innocent citizens were lying down when unknown gunmen attacked them.
“A woman lost two of her children while she too was cut with a machete almost at the verge of being killed.
“Two other persons were seriously injured. I am here to see things by myself.
“I think this action is barbaric and any right thinking human being will condemn it.
“I find it difficult to believe if they are truly their brother’s keeper; it is wrong to call for peace and a particular community involved in the peace process is attacked the next day,” he said.
Meanwhile, Police Spokesman, David Misal, confirmed the incident at Bujum Waya.
“The police have taken over the matter for investigation.
“We are awaiting the outcome of the investigation to know those behind the attack,” he explained.
NAN recalled that the clash between Joele and Shomo communities on April 12 in Lau left 25 people dead and many with various degrees of injuries.
The crisis also caused wanton destruction of property worth millions of naira and displaced thousands of people.
