Senate President Bukola Saraki has promised to offset the salary arrears of some categories of workers in his state, Kwara.
Workers in the employment of most local governments in the state and teachers employed by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) are owed arrears of salaries.
The salary arrears being owed the local government workers range from two months in some to six months in others.
Saraki made the promise during the state monthly stakeholders’ meeting of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Ilorin at the weekend.

Abdulfatah Ahmed, the state governor, who attended the meeting, had earlier revealed the dilemma the government was facing over the salary arrears.
He attributed the inability of the affected local governments to pay to the drop in federal allocation to the state and the refusal of the Federal Government to release the state’s last tranche of the Paris Club refund.
The governor, nonetheless, maintained that plans were going on to ensure payment of the arrears to the affected workers.
Saraki said he would commence payment of the arrears with three selected local government areas, one each from the three senatorial districts of the state.
The Senate President’s intervention was applauded by the PDP supporters at the meeting who had earlier stressed the need for concerned authorities to find means of settling the arrears of salary.
