Porta dos Fundos, the creators of ‘Gay Jesus’ a Netflix Christmas special, have suffered a petrol bomb attack — weeks after the comedy was released.
It was earlier reported that the 45-minute special had caused a heated backlash, with prominent figures charging users to delete the streaming service’s app from their devices.
In a new development, two petrol bombs were thrown at the Rio de Janeiro headquarters of Porta dos Fundos, in the early hours of December 24.
While the comedy group said the incident “put several innocent lives at risk,” it added in a Facebook post that there were no injuries sustained as security staff were able to put out the fire outbreak.
“In the early morning of December 24, on Christmas Eve, the headquarters of Porta dos Fundos was the victim of an attack. Molotov cocktails were thrown at our building,” the comedy group wrote.
“We will move on, more united, stronger, more inspired and confident that the country will survive this storm of hatred and love will prevail alongside freedom of speech.”
Speaking on the incident, the Brazilian police authorities confirmed that the video of a group claiming responsibility for the attack is being investigated and that it doesn’t rule out classifing the attack as terrorism.
The attack comes after “over 2.3 million people” had signed a petition to have the film removed from Netflix among several other similar campaigns as regards the movie.
