Osun State Commissioner for Works and Transportation, Mr Kazeem Salami has warned the Osun Road Marshals to always discharge their duties in line with the guidelines of the scheme.
Salami gave this warning in Osogbo on Wednesday at a stakeholders meeting with the Executive of Commercial Cyclists Association over the Tuesday’s face off between the road marshals and cyclists in the state.
The Commissioner, who emphasized that the marshals had the right to enforce traffic laws on the roads urged cyclists to desist from violating traffic laws.
He decried the attitude of some commercial cyclists to the operations of the scheme, saying the marshals were operating under the directive of the state government.
Salami, maintained that the government established the scheme with a view to controlling traffic in the state as well as ensuring orderliness in the state capital.
The Commissioner, called on the commercial cyclists to acquit themselves to the fine attached to each offence to avoid crisis ,submitting that government would hesitate to sanction any erring cyclists.
The Osun Works and Transportation Commissioner, disclosed that the Ministry had concluded arrangement to ensure that each commercial cyclist had identification cards for easy monitoring.
He hinted that the recent face off between the marshals and cyclists were hijacked by hoodlums who were bent in fighting the authority calling the cyclists not to allow political thugs to disrupt their activities.
Speaking, the Acting Executive Secretary Office of Transportation, Engr. Olayiwola Ibrahim urged the commercial cyclists to always report any marshal that intend to extort them to his office for appropriate action.
Ibrahim, maintained that the operations of the marshals was key traffic control in the state hence the need for commercial cyclists to always support road marshals in their activities.
He resolved that the Ministry would continue to work with relevant stakeholders in the state to make the state free from road mishap.
On his part, the Special Adviser to the governor on Taxation, Mr Gbenga Akano said all the programmes and policies of government was aimed at making life more bearable for the citizenry.
Akano, charged the cyclists to support government in its quest to make their job easy through effective traffic control.
One of the stakeholders who spoke with newsmen shortly after the meeting, Comrade Ojetola Bashiru, commended the Osun State government for their people oriented programmes towards the betterment of the entire people of the state.
Bashiru emphasized that since the inception of the Traffic Road Marshall in the state, road accident has reduced drastically while traffic hold-up has also reduced with the support of the Marshall and other road protection agencies.
“The Traffic Road Marshall should continue their work in the state as we Okada Riders and other Motorists are enjoying their services towards safety of lives on the roads”, Bashiru added.
